This study, carried out through mail-questionnaire, was to find out the domestic accidents which occurred during April, 1983, on 1115 households registered to the Deqartment of Family Medicine, Seoul National University Hospital. The total respondents were 365 households with 1712 family members. Thus the response rate obtained was 35.2%.
The major findings obtained were as follows:
1. The total number of domestic accidents which occurred during April, 1983, on the households responded, was 40, the accident rate reaching 23.3 per 1,000 person-month.
2. The difference of accident rates between sexes was statistically insignificant.
3. In the case of males, the accident rate was highest between ages 4 and 14, and in the case of female, between ages 45 and 64.
4. The main causes of the accidents were cutting and piercing by sharp objects, drop or slip, burns, collisions, and poisonings.
5. The accidents was more frequently encountered in the afternoon, especially between the noon to 6:00 P.M.
6. The bedroom or livingroom and garden were the most probable place of accident.
7. The most prevailing type of injury was laceration and sprain, followed by contusion, burns and abrasion.
8. Upper extremities were the most afflicted part of the body, followed by lower extremities, face, and systemic injury.
9. The mode of duration of treatment was 5 days, with complete recovery ensuing in 87.5%.
