In order to know the disease distribution of pediatric age group, all patients under 14 years of age who visited Kwangju Hospital from September 1983 to August 1984 were reviewed and analyzed.
The results of this study were as follows.
1. There were 8,927 visits of the pediatric age group among total 27,387 visits to the OPD or the emergency room. There were 323 admissions of the pediatric age group among total 1,509 admissions.
2. There were 5,838 diseases of the pediatric age group. The male to female ratio was 1:0.72. In age distribution, the age group of 1 to 5 year was the largest with 2,438 cases (41.8%), 1 month to 1 year 1,984 cases, (34.0%) and 5 year to 10 year 879 cases (15.0%).
3. In seasonal distribution of diseases, cases were most common in May. and least in January.
4. Classifying the total cases by the reason for visit, the most common reason was diagnosis and treatment of diseases (4,874 cases, 83.5%), the second was vaccination (642 cases, 11.0%), and the third was accident (169 cases, 2.9%).
5. Classifying the diseases by system, the most frequent diseases were respiratory disease with 3,147 cases (62.4%), followed by digestive disease 87 cases (19.6%), skin disease 384 cases (7.5%).
6. In 4,876 cases of medical disease, common diseases were URI, acute gastroenteritis, pneumonia, and bronchitis in order of frequency. In 257 cases of surgical disease, common diseases were burn, falling down, car accident, and dog bite in order of frequency.
7. In 323 admissions, four most common diseases were pneumonia, hepatitis, acute gastroenteritis, and seizure disorder in order of frequency.
8. Twenty four cases were referred to larger hospital (Yeongdong hospital); sepsis (5 cases) and congenital heart disease (5 cases) were most common.
