Abstract
Intussusception is the most frequent cause of intestinal obstruction in children between the age of 2 months and 5 years. The prognosis of this disease depends on early diagnosis and treatment. A clinical study was done on 199 cases of intussusception in children who were admitted to Soh Wha Children's Hospital from Jan. 1983 to Dec. 1984.
The results were:
1. Intussusception was more common in male than female children (M:F = 2:1), the peak age group was 4-9 months (47.2%).
2. URI history was noted in 25 cases (12.6%) and diarrhea in 12 cases (6.0%) before intussusception.
3. The most frequent symptoms were abdominal pain and irritability in 156 cases (78.3%), followed by vomiting in 153 cases (76.9%).
4. Bloody, mucoid stool was noted in 91 cases (45.7%) and abdominal mass was palpated in 74 cases (37.2%).
5. The most frequent anatomical type of intussusception was ileo-colic type in 134 cases (67.3%), followed by colo-colic type in 25 cases (12.6%) and ileo-cecal type in 14 cases (7.0%).
6. Intussusception was managed by barium reduction in 123 cases (61.8%), manual reduction in 70 cases (35.2%) and segmental resection in 6 cases (3.0%).
7. Barium reduction rate by onset of symptoms and signs was highest (94.4%) within 12 hours, followed by 86.1% within 12-24 hours, 47.5% within 24-48 hrs.
8. Operation rate by age was highest (60.4%) in patients under 6 months, followed by 34.5% in 7-12 months, 22.5% in 13-24 months, 17.6% in 25-36 months of age.
