Increased blood levels of cholesterol and triglyceride are not rarein healthy general population. Hyperlipidemia is well known risk factor in atherosclerosis, colon cancer and breast cancer. Lowering of blood lipid level is proven to be effective in reducing the risk of atherosclerotic heart disease and their complications. Therefore annual checking of the serum levels of cholesterol and triglyceride is worthy of being listed in the health maintenance screening program.
We studied the incidences of various risk factors of atherosclerosis and correlations among them using 169 cases of male who visited Inha hospital for routine check up with health maintenance program in 1987 and 1988. Age distribution of the cases was high in 6th decade(45.6%) and 5th decade(32.5%). The incidence of obesity index(of Thomas) 25% or more was 48.5%. The incidence of systolic hypertension higher than 160mmHg was 8.3% and that of diasiolic hypertension higher than 100 mmHg was 11.2%. The incidence of HDL-C cholesterol ratio less than 20% was 28.4%. Hypertriglyceridemia more than 200 mg/dl was 32.5%.
Significant correlations among the risk factors were observed especially between the obesity index and HDL-C / cholesterol, obesity index and diastolic pressure, age and HDL-C / cholesterol.
